Having been a wedding photographer for over 10 years now it is a bit shocking to me that it took me this long to be able to photograph an actual surprise proposal! Kristin, the venue coordinator for one of my favorite venues in Austin (the Driskill Hotel), called to schedule a portrait session out in Colorado while they were visiting for a Red Rocks show in June. Soon after, I get a call from Russell to let me know he would like to propose to her during the session. I was beyond excited to hear of this and began scheming up locations and ways we could cue each other so we both knew when it was best to go down. I came up with a cue that I won’t divulge so I can hopefully keep it secret just for other future soon-to-be grooms. Russell gave all the signs of absolutely not proposing during this session, including but not limited to being extra sassy at the beginning of the shoot and pronouncing my name as “Carolyn” all the way leading up to the day of. Right after he got down on one knee that news got out that we were in cahoots all along. It was so special to be able to share in such a memorable day for them. Events like these are why I cherish my career.

It sure is amazing that Austin can host an all outdoor wedding in the middle of February with perfect weather. It was a perfect day overlooking Lake Travis from start to finish at Villa del Lago. [side note: I’m so sad to say that this is one of the last weddings this venue will see due to new ownership] April & Trevor had an amazing line up of vendors including Pearl Events, the Drywater Band, Royal Fig catering, and of course Big Dog Pyro, some of these of which I have been working with for upwards of 10 years now.  (kind of crazy!) I couldn’t have asked for a more easy going day as a photographer, thank you for having me April and Trevor, I can’t wait to get started on your album!

I was lucky enough to click with Laura the minute I spoke to her on the phone about her wedding day. We went to Zilker Park and Lake Austin for their engagement session where Lindsay took us out on their boat. A perfect evening watching the sunset over the 360 bridge finished off by an amazing dinner. So by the time I showed up in Hawaii to meet up with them at their rehearsal dinner, they felt like good friends. In true Hawaii style it was a beautiful day at the Mauna Kea beach hotel where the ceremony and reception were held outside. Despite the fire dancers briefly catching the DJ’s stage on fire, they put on an amazing show before the party got started. After the reception exit I hung out with the bridal party until the wee hours of the morning getting to know the couple and their group of friends. Since then we’ve been able to connect in their current city of Austin as well as their former city of Denver. We’re due to catch up again asap. :)

I absolutely love reconnecting with former clients at weddings, it is such an honor to be thought of again years after their friend or family’s wedding day. In this case, I photographed Camillia & Will’s wedding in Puerto Rico back in 2011 as well as her brother’s wedding in Austin in 2016. On their wedding date last June, I couldn’t help but post one of my favorite photos (the last) and write about how I felt. “Putting in words how I feel tonight has been a difficult undertaking. Appreciative, proud, grateful are a few words I can think of but they still don’t do my feelings justice. There is so much more to the way my clients can make me feel after photographing them. I’ve always thought of myself as a person that is weak in empathy, (in true honesty), but my clients evoke feelings in me I didn’t know I had the ability to feel… and like finding a muscle you didn’t know you had, you work it out to become stronger. Then all of a sudden, it’s a regular muscle in use. I photographed Sandra’s cousin’s wedding almost 7 years ago and today I hung out with their family again like it was yesterday. That is special. ♥️ ” Looking back on the photos 10 months later makes me feel so special all over again.
