I was lucky enough to click with Laura the minute I spoke to her on the phone about her wedding day. We went to Zilker Park and Lake Austin for their engagement session where Lindsay took us out on their boat. A perfect evening watching the sunset over the 360 bridge finished off by an amazing dinner. So by the time I showed up in Hawaii to meet up with them at their rehearsal dinner, they felt like good friends. In true Hawaii style it was a beautiful day at the Mauna Kea beach hotel where the ceremony and reception were held outside. Despite the fire dancers briefly catching the DJ’s stage on fire, they put on an amazing show before the party got started. After the reception exit I hung out with the bridal party until the wee hours of the morning getting to know the couple and their group of friends. Since then we’ve been able to connect in their current city of Austin as well as their former city of Denver. We’re due to catch up again asap. :)

I absolutely love reconnecting with former clients at weddings, it is such an honor to be thought of again years after their friend or family’s wedding day. In this case, I photographed Camillia & Will’s wedding in Puerto Rico back in 2011 as well as her brother’s wedding in Austin in 2016. On their wedding date last June, I couldn’t help but post one of my favorite photos (the last) and write about how I felt. “Putting in words how I feel tonight has been a difficult undertaking. Appreciative, proud, grateful are a few words I can think of but they still don’t do my feelings justice. There is so much more to the way my clients can make me feel after photographing them. I’ve always thought of myself as a person that is weak in empathy, (in true honesty), but my clients evoke feelings in me I didn’t know I had the ability to feel… and like finding a muscle you didn’t know you had, you work it out to become stronger. Then all of a sudden, it’s a regular muscle in use. I photographed Sandra’s cousin’s wedding almost 7 years ago and today I hung out with their family again like it was yesterday. That is special. ♥️ ” Looking back on the photos 10 months later makes me feel so special all over again.

Yosemite National Park Engagement Session

One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to know my clients. I work with a huge variety of clientele from doctors to fellow photographers which gives me so many opportunities to learn new things. These two Austinites now live in San Diego working on their residency and fell in love with Yosemite on a recent trip and wanted to have their engagement session there. I had never been and while enticed by the idea upon the initial suggestion, I put my bar too low for the location. HOLY MOLY this place was breathtakingly beautiful. Like one of those spots you just can’t take a bad photo at; add the adorable Thao & Doug to the mix and I felt like the universe was handing me gold. I think my next stop should be Yellowstone, who wants to be photographed there? :)

Hawaii is absolutely one of the most beautiful places I have ever been, so I was beyond excited at the opportunity to go for a second time last spring. I brought along my good friend and fellow wedding photographer, Lindsey Thorne, to photograph the wedding with me. Sarah & Miguel had friends and family from all over the world meet them in paradise to celebrate their long awaited union at St. Augustine By the Sea. After the ceremony we wandered the beach amongst the tourists soaking sun and slowly made our way to the reception at the Terrace at The Hyatt Regency overlooking Waikiki beach. The next morning we got up at 4:30 in the morning to have a day after session at sunrise, it was difficult to pull ourselves out of bed but it was worth the journey. We wandered over sharp rocks and got splashed by water as I covered my camera with my dress at every wave. Thank you Sarah & Miguel for going on the adventure with us and for treating us to Leonard’s donuts afterwards.
